Free spelling practice: the Year 1 words, read aloud, grouped by pattern.
What your child works on in Year 1
- Maths
- Counting to 120 and beyond, tens and ones, adding and subtracting facts to 20, doubles, making ten to add, skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, equal groups, half past, measuring with units, and tallies and tables.
- English
- Reading words with letter teams like day, night and boat, tricky words at a glance, word endings, commas, question marks and speech marks, joining sentences with because, when and if, and who, what, where and when questions about a story.
- Science
- Living things and life cycles, how our senses work, pushes and pulls, light and shadows, how sounds are made, magnets, weather, seasons and rocks, day and night, and the steps that control a robot.
Years 1 and 2 share Stage 1 of the NSW syllabus, so Learnest works from one list of Stage 1 skills. The first day in each subject is a check that finds where your child is. A Hear it button reads maths and science questions aloud.

Questions parents ask
How long does Learnest take each day in Year 1?
About fifteen minutes. Each session starts with reviews, then new work at your child's level. In Settings you can make a child's sessions shorter or longer.
What do I get each night?
An email each school night naming the skill that slipped, at 9:30 pm or a time you pick, and a weekly email with the week and a note for the tutor. Your dashboard shows each child's day, their gaps and whether a fix has held.
Does it follow the NSW syllabus for Year 1?
Yes. Learnest works from the Stage 1 maths, English and science skills of the NSW syllabus. The first day in each subject is a check that finds your child's level, and the app plans each day from their answers.
What does it cost?
A$10 a month for one child and A$5 a month for each extra child. It starts with 14 days free: you add a card on Stripe's page and pay A$0 today. Cancel online before day 14 and you pay nothing.
