Chance words say how sure we are that something will happen: certain, likely, unlikely or impossible. Count what is there before you choose.
The steps, on one like it
A bag has 1 green block and 6 purple blocks. Isla takes one without looking. Will it be green?
-
Count the green blocks. There is just 1.
Green can still come out, so it is not impossible.
-
Count the purple blocks. There are 6.
Purple has many more ways to come out than green.
-
Green can happen, but not often, so say unlikely.
Unlikely means it could happen, but probably will not.
Answer: unlikely
The mistake people often make
Saying impossible because there is only 1 green block.
Impossible means there are none at all. If even 1 is there, it can happen.
Try it ten times
Put 1 green block and 6 purple blocks in a bag. Take one out without looking, say its colour and put it back. Do this 10 times. Purple comes out most times, and green turns up only now and then, or not at all. Green could come out, but you would not expect it.
