Sample questions

Questions from Learnest's own Stage 3 question bank. Try each one, then open the worked answer.

Or hand the device over: let your child try seven questions on the real screens, about five minutes, no sign-up.

  1. Maths: discounts

A $40 cap and a $30 scarf are both 50% off. What is the total sale price, in dollars?

    Your child types the answer.

    See the worked answer

    Answer: 35

Find each discount from its own price, take it off that price, then do what the question asks with the sale prices.

  2. Maths: rebuild the whole

A tank has had 1⁄4 of its water used, and 30 L is left. How many litres does the full tank hold?

    Your child types the answer.

    See the worked answer

    Answer: 40

Match the amount you know to its fraction, find one part, then build the whole or the part the question asks for.

  3. English: complex sentences

Choose the joining word that makes this a complex sentence: Omar will go to training ___ he finishes his homework.

    1. Option A: and
    2. Option B: but
    3. Option C: yet
    4. Option D: if
    See the worked answer

    Answer: D, if

Words such as if, when and because start a dependent clause, which makes a complex sentence. And, but and yet join equal clauses.

  4. Science: a fair test

Ravi wants to test if the amount of water changes how tall bean plants grow. Which plan is fair?

    1. Option A: 50, 100 and 150 mL a day, with the same soil, pot and light
    2. Option B: 50, 100 and 150 mL a day, each plant at a different window
    3. Option C: 100 mL a day for every plant, with the same soil, pot and light
    4. Option D: 50, 100 and 150 mL a day, each plant in a different soil
    See the worked answer

Answer: A, 50, 100 and 150 mL a day, with the same soil, pot and light

A fair plan changes only the amount of water and keeps soil, pot and light the same for every plant.
