Sample questions

Questions from Learnest's own Stage 4 question bank. Try each one, then open the worked answer.

Or hand the device over: let your child try seven questions on the real screens, about five minutes, no sign-up.

  1. Maths: one-step equations

    Solve x + 6 = 20. What is x?

    Your child types the answer.

    See the worked answer

    Answer: 14

Adding 6 was done to x, so undo it by subtracting 6 from both sides. 20 - 6 is 14.

  2. Maths: multiply integers

    What is -12 × 3?

    Your child types the answer.

    See the worked answer

    Answer: -36

Multiply the numbers without their signs first: 12 × 3 is 36. The signs are different, so the answer is negative.

  3. English: a word in context

In this line, what does 'dismal' mean? 'The dismal weather, grey and wet all week, kept everyone inside.'

    1. Option A: gloomy and dull
    2. Option B: bright and sunny
    3. Option C: hot and dry
    4. Option D: windy and wild
    See the worked answer

    Answer: A, gloomy and dull

The weather was 'grey and wet all week' and kept everyone inside, so 'dismal' means gloomy and dull.

  4. Science: variables

Zara heats water to different temperatures and times how long a sugar cube takes to dissolve. What is the independent variable?

    1. Option A: The water temperature
    2. Option B: The time to dissolve
    3. Option C: The amount of sugar
    4. Option D: The cup used each time
    See the worked answer

    Answer: A, The water temperature

The independent variable is the one thing changed on purpose. Zara changes the water temperature.
