Parent guide: NAPLAN.

What NAPLAN is

Who sits it
Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, every year.
What it tests
Writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
How it runs
Online, and tailored: the questions a student sees later in a test depend on their answers earlier in it.
How long
Reading and numeracy take 45 minutes in Year 3, 50 in Year 5 and 65 in Years 7 and 9. Conventions of language takes 45 minutes in every year. Writing takes 40 minutes in Year 3 and 42 in the other years.

How Learnest helps

  • Every day: fifteen to twenty minutes of the NSW syllabus. The app finds the exact skill your child is stuck on, teaches it again and checks it holds.
  • NAPLAN-style papers: from your parent page, set a timed paper in numeracy (30 questions), language conventions (35 questions) or reading (20 questions on whole passages). The clock matches the real test for your child's year: numeracy and reading run 45 minutes in Years 3 and 4, 50 in Years 5 and 6 and 65 in Years 7 and 8.
  • No help during a paper, as in the real test: no hints and no marks until the end. Then your child looks back over each question, what they wrote and the right answer. A paper changes no points and no daily work.
  • Years 3 to 8 on one plan: the Year 3, 5 and 7 tests, and the years between.

What Learnest does not do: it does not set or mark writing tasks, and its papers are not tailored the way NAPLAN online is. Each paper is fixed when it starts and runs from easier to harder questions.

Each year has a page with what your child works on and sample questions: Year 3, Year 5 and Year 7.

Sample questions

One question for each kind of paper, from Years 3, 5 and 7. They come from Learnest's own question bank. Try each one, then open the worked answer.

  1. Year 3 numeracy

55 children go on a trip. Each car holds 6 children. How many cars are needed?

    Your child types the answer.

    See the worked answer

    Answer: 10

    6 × 9 = 54, and the last child still needs a ride, so 10 are needed.

  2. Year 3 language conventions

Which sentence uses the past tense correctly?

    1. Option A: Leila brought her lunch to school.
    2. Option B: Leila bringed her lunch to school.
    3. Option C: Leila brang her lunch to school.
    4. Option D: Leila brings her lunch to school.
    See the worked answer

Answer: A, Leila brought her lunch to school.

Bring is irregular. Its past tense is brought, not bringed.

  3. Year 5 numeracy

Which is the largest: 0.3, 1⁄4 or 28%?

    1. Option A: They are all equal
    2. Option B: 28%
    3. Option C: 1⁄4
    4. Option D: 0.3
    See the worked answer

    Answer: D, 0.3

Change them all to percentages: 0.3 is 30%, 1⁄4 is 25%, and 28% stays 28%.

  4. Year 5 language conventions

Which sentence punctuates the speech correctly?

    1. Option A: Mum said, Dinner is ready.
    2. Option B: "Mum said, Dinner is ready."
    3. Option C: Mum said, "dinner is ready."
    4. Option D: Mum said, "Dinner is ready."
    See the worked answer

Answer: D, Mum said, "Dinner is ready."

Quotation marks go around only the words someone says. The spoken words start with a capital letter.

  5. Year 7 numeracy

    What is 2 1⁄2 + 1 3⁄4 - 5⁄8?

    1. Option A: 39⁄8
    2. Option B: 34⁄8
    3. Option C: 5⁄8
    4. Option D: 29⁄8
    See the worked answer

    Answer: D, 29⁄8

    2 1⁄2 is 20⁄8 and 1 3⁄4 is 14⁄8, so the sum is 34/8. Taking 5⁄8 leaves 29⁄8, or 3 5/8.
